The concourse of the Fort William Henry Hotel at Lake George, New York, was the central public room of a large resort built near the site of the colonial-era Fort William Henry, which the French captured in 1757 during the French and Indian War. Photographs like this one, from the Detroit Publishing Company, document how grand summer hotels presented themselves to guests in the early twentieth century, when Lake George was a popular destination for wealthy visitors from New York and Montreal. The glass negative shows the open, high-ceilinged lobby layout that such resorts used to make a strong first impression.
