The dining room of the Fort William Henry Hotel, on the shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack foothills, is the subject here. The hotel stood near the site of the British fort of the same name, which was besieged by the French in 1757 and became a famous episode of the French and Indian War. By the early 1900s, Lake George had become a popular summer destination for travelers arriving by steamboat and rail, and the Detroit Publishing Company made many views of such resorts to showcase their appeal. The image shows the formal, well-set dining spaces that hotels of this era offered to their guests.
