The ballroom of the Fort William Henry Hotel sits at the southern end of Lake George in New York, a resort town built on a site with a far older history. The hotel's grounds lie near the location of the British fort destroyed during the 1757 siege, and by the early 1900s the lake had become a popular summer destination for wealthy visitors arriving by rail and steamboat. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented hotels, resorts and scenic places across the country in these years. The picture offers a useful look at the formal interiors that drew guests to Lake George's grand hotels.
