Here the side-wheel steamer Horicon pulls away from the pier of the Fort William Henry Hotel, a resort on the shore of Lake George in New York. The hotel stood near the site of the 1757 British fort whose siege became central to James Fenimore Cooper's novel *The Last of the Mohicans*. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass-plate negative between 1905 and 1911, when it sold views of scenic destinations to travelers and promoters. Pictures like this capture the steamboat culture that carried summer guests across the lake before the automobile reshaped resort travel.
