The approach to the Fort William Henry Hotel from the steamboat landing shows the route visitors took up from the water to one of the best-known resorts on Lake George. The hotel stood near the site of the colonial-era Fort William Henry, where British and French forces fought during the French and Indian War, and in the decades around 1900 it was part of the boom in lakeside tourism that brought steamers and railroads full of vacationers to the Adirondack region. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views like this one to promote such destinations, so the picture also records how a resort was presented to travelers of the period.
