Taken from the water, this view shows the Fort William Henry Hotel as steamboat passengers would have first seen it approaching the Lake George shoreline. The hotel took its name from the colonial fort nearby, where British forces surrendered to the French in 1757 and where a notorious massacre of surrendering troops followed. By the turn of the twentieth century, Lake George had become a fashionable summer resort, and grand hotels like this one drew visitors from New York and beyond. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative, produced many such views to promote travel and tourism.
