Two glass negatives, printed as a pair, record a wide view of Lake George taken from the Fort William Henry Hotel at the lake's southern end. The hotel stood near the ruins of the British fort that the French captured in 1757, a site James Fenimore Cooper later made famous in *The Last of the Mohicans*. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold scenic views to tourists and travel promoters in the early 1900s, produced many landscapes of the region. Joining two plates allowed the photographer to capture the broad sweep of water and shoreline that one frame could not hold.
