From the terrace of the Fort William Henry Hotel, this view looks out over Lake George in the Adirondack foothills of New York, with a fountain noted among the subjects in the record. The hotel took its name from the colonial fort at the lake's southern end, which was besieged by French forces in 1757 during the French and Indian War. By about 1908, when this glass negative was made, Lake George had become a popular summer resort, and the Detroit Publishing Company produced many such scenes to promote travel by rail and steamboat. The picture shows how the resort landscape of that era was presented to tourists.
