This view turns from the lake to the interior of the Fort William Henry Hotel's reception parlor in Lake George, New York. The hotel sat on the grounds of the British fort that was besieged and surrendered to the French in 1757, an event that inspired James Fenimore Cooper's novel *The Last of the Mohicans*. By the turn of the century, the lake had become a fashionable summer resort, and hotels like this one drew visitors from New York and beyond. The Detroit Publishing Company made large glass-plate views like this one to showcase such destinations to travelers and promoters.
