The title points to a shaded path at the Fort William Henry Hotel on the western shore of Lake George in New York, a resort that stood on the grounds of the 18th-century fort famous for the 1757 siege during the French and Indian War. By the turn of the 20th century, lakeside hotels like this drew summer visitors from cities such as New York and Philadelphia, who came for boating, music and leisurely walks. The Detroit Publishing Company made large glass-plate views like this one for promotional and travel sales, so the picture captures how the resort presented itself to the public. Its title, "Lovers' lane," suggests the wooded paths that were a popular feature of such resorts.
