Moonlight spreads across the water at the dock of the Fort William Henry Hotel on Lake George, where the steamboat Sagamore is tied up beside the pier. The hotel took its name from the colonial fort at the lake's southern end, which was besieged and surrendered during the French and Indian War in 1757, an episode that gave the lake a lasting place in American history. By the early 1900s, resort hotels and steamboats carried summer visitors up and down the lake, and the Detroit Publishing Company produced views like this one for travelers and collectors. A night scene on a glass negative of this size required a long exposure and a steady hand.
