The concourse of the Fort William Henry Hotel at Lake George, New York, shows the open central hall of a grand summer resort that drew wealthy vacationers to the lake around 1900. The hotel took its name from the colonial fort at the lake's southern end, where the 1757 siege ended in a massacre of surrendering British troops. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American places to promote travel, the view records the leisure culture of the early twentieth century.
