Fort William Henry Hotel stood on the shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack foothills, on or near the site of the 18th-century British fort of the same name. That fort was besieged by the French under Montcalm in 1757, and the surrender that followed led to a massacre of British soldiers and civilians, an episode later dramatized in James Fenimore Cooper's *The Last of the Mohicans*. By the early 1900s the lake had become a popular summer destination, reached by rail and steamboat, and resort hotels like this one catered to visitors drawn by the scenery and the history. This view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American resorts and landmarks for travel promotion.
