Koblenz, at the meeting of the Rhine and Moselle, was in the spring of 1919 under Allied occupation after the armistice of November 1918. American troops held the city and its surroundings as part of the occupation zone, and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress on the high ground across the Rhine, long a Prussian military stronghold, had become a symbol of the region's military past. Koblenz had served as the seat of the Prussian Rhine Province administration, and its economy rested on river trade, wine shipping, and the rail lines that followed the valley. Residents faced food shortages, the uncertainty of occupation, and the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which limited German military presence on the left bank of the Rhine. The view shows a town that had been a garrison and administrative center for generations, now living under foreign authority while it waited to learn its future.
