Vallendar, a small town on the right bank of the Rhine just north of Koblenz, looked out in 1919 on a valley shaped by river traffic, vineyards, and the wooded slopes of the Westerwald. The year followed the armistice of November 1918, and the Koblenz area had become the center of the American occupation zone, so American soldiers, officers, and photographers were a visible presence along the river. Vallendar's economy rested on local farming, vine-growing, and the river trade that moved goods up and down the Rhine, while its religious institutions, including a Catholic seminary, gave the town a quiet scholarly character. The Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919, left the Rhineland under Allied occupation and uncertain, and residents of the valley lived with that shadow as they went about ordinary work.
