Bendorf, a small industrial town on the east bank of the Rhine across from Koblenz, was in the American occupation zone in 1919, after the armistice of November 1918. American troops held the Koblenz bridgehead under the Third Army, and the Rhineland's towns lived under Allied military rule while the Treaty of Versailles was negotiated and signed that summer. Bendorf's economy had long rested on the ironworks at nearby Sayn, and the postwar shortages of coal, raw materials, and credit hit such works hard. For the German families living along the river, the arrival of foreign soldiers, curfews, and requisitions shaped daily life as much as the distant peace talks did. The picture records American infantrymen of the 9th Infantry posed on the Rhine, a reminder of how this quiet river town had become a foreign garrison.
