Cathedral Square in Cologne, pictured in August 1919, lay in a city under Allied occupation eight months after the armistice ended the war. British troops had entered Cologne in December 1918 as part of the occupation of the Rhineland, and residents lived with their presence every day. The Gothic cathedral, completed in 1880 after centuries of construction, rose over the square with its twin spires, a landmark above the Rhine. Under Mayor Konrad Adenauer, the city government dealt with postwar shortages, unemployment, and the strain of the peace settlement signed at Versailles in June. Cologne had long been known as a river port, rail junction, and center of trade and manufacturing, and its residents would have seen the square as the heart of that older city.
