The Siebengebirge, a cluster of extinct volcanic hills on the east bank of the Rhine south of Bonn, drew day trippers from Bonn and Cologne in 1921. The Drachenfels, the best known of its peaks, was crowned by a medieval castle ruin and had been reached by a rack railway since 1883. Germany was still recovering from defeat in the First World War, with reparations weighing on its currency, and the Rhineland had lived under Allied occupation since 1918, including British troops in the Bonn area. Quarries on the hills had long cut trachyte and basalt for building, but by then the wooded slopes, lower vineyards and river views drew walkers looking for relief from hard postwar years.
