The New Exchange Hotel in Montgomery, Alabama, is the subject of this view, made around 1906. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a large format that recorded fine architectural detail. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States to document towns, railways, and landmarks, made the negative. Hotels like this one were central to travel in the period, when railroad passengers and traveling salesmen relied on them for lodging and meals.
