Commerce Street runs down toward Court Square in Montgomery, Alabama, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative captures the square itself, with its fountain and the commercial buildings that lined it. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country around the turn of the twentieth century, made the view, and its number appears in the record alongside a "G 3640" mark on the negative. Court Square had long been the civic and market heart of the city, and a fountain there would have served as a gathering point for the downtown trade. The date is listed as 1906 with a question mark, so the exact year is uncertain.
