Hotel Hillman stood in Birmingham, Alabama, a city that grew quickly after its founding in 1871 as a center of iron and steel production, earning it the nickname "Magic City." This c1906 view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to record towns, railways and commercial buildings for sale as picture postcards and prints. The negative was later given to the Library of Congress by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Hotels like this one were central to a growing city's business travelers and visitors, so the picture also shows how urban commerce looked in the early twentieth century.
