Red Mountain, the ridge beside Birmingham, Alabama, supplied iron ore for the city's furnaces, and this c. 1906 view shows a mine there with rail tracks running into the workings. Birmingham grew rapidly from the 1870s as a center of iron and steel, drawing on nearby coal, limestone, and ore, and it earned the nickname "Magic City" for its fast rise. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American scenes around 1900, made the view on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Note the rail lines against the cut face of the hill, a sign of how closely mining and transport depended on each other.
