Birmingham, Alabama, was growing at a remarkable pace around 1906, and the Title Guarantee Land and Trust Building shows the office construction that growth demanded. The city was founded in 1871 around iron, steel and coal, and its rapid expansion earned it the nickname "Magic City." This image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its photographs of American towns, landscapes and commercial districts. Office blocks like this one reflected the booming real estate and business trade of the period.
