The Lincoln Gates stand at the entrance to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, the school Booker T. Washington founded in 1881 to train Black students in teaching and practical trades. The gates were built as a tribute to Abraham Lincoln and to emancipation, and they became one of the campus's best-known landmarks. This view was made around 1906 as a large 8 by 10 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, landscapes and institutions for sale as prints and postcards. Its catalog markings show it passed through several hands before reaching the Library of Congress, and it preserves how the entrance looked in the school's early decades.
