Two nearly identical glass negatives record Washington's headquarters at Newburgh, New York, the stone Hasbrouck House where he based the Continental Army from April 1782 to August 1783. It was the longest he stayed in one place during the Revolution, and the army's unrest over unpaid wages there led to the anonymous "Newburgh Addresses" in March 1783, which Washington answered by urging patience and restraint. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenic and historic sites for sale in the early 1900s, made these plates, and its catalog places them around 1906. The subject list also names cannons, a reminder of the site's military role.
