Marblehead's old houses are known for their weathered clapboards and steep rooflines, and this one carries two names: the Old Brig and the Moll Pitcher House. The second name points to Molly Pitcher, a local fortune teller who was said to have lived in the town in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and whose reputation drew the attention of writer John Greenleaf Whittier, who wrote a poem about her. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American towns and landmarks around the turn of the 20th century, recorded buildings like this as part of a broader interest in historic architecture and the colonial past.
