Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber, the humorist who created the malapropism-prone Mrs. Partington, was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1814, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the house identified in its catalog record as his birthplace. The picture was made around 1907 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns, landmarks, and scenery across the United States in the early twentieth century. Its view of the Portsmouth dwelling reflects a period when old houses were beginning to draw interest as links to the nation's past. Shillaber later edited the Boston Carpet-Bag, a humorous weekly that helped establish his reputation as a writer.
