Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was already a busy crossroads of streetcar lines and foot traffic when this view was made around 1906. The scene centers on the plaza and the tracks that carried trolleys through it, a reminder of how much the square depended on rail transit in the early twentieth century. The photograph is a glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns and streets in the years before the First World War, and the company's catalog number is recorded on the plate. Its record also notes a later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
