Hotel Wendell in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, sat in the Berkshire Hills, a region where hotels served a steady stream of summer visitors and business travelers around 1906. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to record towns, rail lines and landmarks for sale as postcards and souvenir views, made this large 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Its 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado helps explain how it came to the Library of Congress. The plate offers a useful record of the architecture and street life of a New England resort town at the turn of the century.
