The Crawford Street Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island, is the subject of this view, which the Detroit Publishing Company recorded around 1906 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. Its subject tags mark it as a view of commercial facilities as well as a bridge, a pairing that suggests the crossing served a working district rather than a purely scenic route. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document cities, rivers and industry in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives capture the street-level detail of that period. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
