Roger Williams Park, the large public park on Providence's south side, is the setting for this view of its natural history museum, shown here as a squared, substantial building set among the park's grounds. The park was laid out in the 1870s and was meant to give residents a place for recreation and self-improvement, and its museum collected specimens and exhibits for public education. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, parks and landmarks from the 1890s into the 1920s. Its ca. 1906 date places it near the height of that work.
