A formal portrait of a minister and his wife, identified as Mahmoud Samy and Mme. Samy, carries a title that the studio recorded but that has not been independently verified. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed government officials, diplomats and other visitors to the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. Glass plates of this period were coated by hand, and many now show streaks and faint blemishes as the emulsion deteriorates, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image's tones and sharpness.
