A glass negative dated January 11, 1926, records President Calvin Coolidge meeting Helen Keller, the author and disability advocate who was one of the best-known women in the country at the time. The plate comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington officials, visitors and events in the early decades of the twentieth century. Glass negatives were the standard capture medium of that era. This one, a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, shows streaks and blemishes from age-related deterioration of its original coating.
