Albert Henry Washburn, the American minister to Vienna, sat for this portrait in July 1924, several years after the Habsburg monarchy had collapsed and Austria had become a small republic. Vienna was still recovering from war, food shortages, and severe inflation, and American diplomats there took part in relief and reconstruction work. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public figures in the early twentieth century, and the glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as the original coatings age.
