Dated March 3, 1921, this glass negative records Henry T. Rainey of Illinois, a Democratic congressman, at a moment of political transition. That date fell on the eve of Warren G. Harding's inauguration, when the outgoing administration was leaving Washington and the new one was preparing to take over. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of lawmakers and public figures. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
