Little is recorded about the sitter beyond his name and home state, John W. Rainey of Illinois, though the record notes that this identification is unverified. The glass negative dates to about 1921 and belongs to the National Photo Company collection, the Washington, D.C., firm whose studio and press work captured many people and events in the capital in the early twentieth century. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age. It came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
