This glass negative is labeled "Wm. B. McKinley, Ill.," a name the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification comes from the company's own records and has not been independently verified. The company ran a large commercial photography operation in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and its plates document officials, visitors and public figures, with this one dated between 1921 and 1922. Look for streaks and small blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the photographer's work. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
