This glass negative pairs two Illinois Republicans, Sen. William B. McKinley and Sen. Medill McCormick, in December 1923, when Congress was back in session. Both men were serving in the Senate at the time. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, visitors and events in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the image. The plate shows the streaks and blemishes common to glass negatives whose original coatings have deteriorated, a reminder of how fragile these records are and how much of the era's visual history survives on them.
