Sen. Royal S. Copeland sat for this portrait on January 18, 1924, early in his first term as a New York senator. Copeland was a physician who had led New York City's health department and later served as dean of a homeopathic medical college, so his public career connected medicine and politics. The date and name come from unverified notes on the negative sleeve, and the glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coating, which are worth noticing as signs of the medium's age.
