Gifford Pinchot, the forester who led the U.S. Forest Service from 1905 to 1910, appears in this March 27, 1924 scene before the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry. Pinchot was a leading advocate for conservation and the scientific management of public forests, and his appearance came during congressional debates over federal forest policy. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on a glass negative. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which result from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
