A senator and a young page boy are paired in this glass negative, dated March 31, 1924. Royal S. Copeland, a physician who had served as mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, had recently taken his seat as a U.S. senator from New York, and Senate pages were teenage boys who ran errands and carried messages on the chamber floor. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, produced many portraits of officials and their staffs in the 1920s. The negative shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in its original coating, but the image remains clear.
