A sitting senator stands with President Calvin Coolidge in this picture, dated January 1, 1924, a few months after Coolidge succeeded Warren G. Harding, who died in office in August 1923. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., at this time, photographing lawmakers, officials and visitors, so the image reflects the steady demand for political portraits in the capital. The title comes from the company's own notes on the negative and has not been independently verified. The glass plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
