Calvin Coolidge appears at the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Square, across from the White House, in this January 1924 view. The date fits the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, a victory that Jackson's admirers celebrated for decades. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives recorded officials, buildings and public events in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, the result of natural deterioration in the glass's original coating.
