The record's title and July 9, 1924 date point to the funeral of Calvin Coolidge Jr., the sixteen-year-old son of President Calvin Coolidge, who died of blood poisoning that month. The negative's date places the picture within days of that loss, a private family grief that became a national story. It was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass-plate work recorded officials and public events of the period, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the image, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
