Two men in dark overcoats step toward the entrance of Memorial Continental Hall in Washington, D.C., the headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as the caption records the arrival of President Calvin Coolidge and his secretary, C. Bascom Slemp, for the Red Cross convention on October 6, 1924. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, buildings and events during the 1910s and 1920s, made the picture on a glass plate. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, which is typical of glass negatives of this age.
