Calvin Coolidge poses with delegates to the National Lumber Manufacturers Association convention, captured in late 1924, when the timber industry's trade group met with the president in Washington. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, events and visitors to the capital for decades, and it reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Coolidge had taken office after Warren Harding's death in 1923, and group portraits like this one were a common way for Washington organizations to mark their meetings with the White House. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
