Dated March 27, 1915, this glass negative records a cornerstone laying for the American Red Cross, an organization then building a permanent home in Washington, D.C. The Red Cross had been founded in 1881 under Clara Barton, and by the 1910s it was growing into a national institution. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington streets, buildings, and public events, made the negative, which was later given to the Library of Congress. Streaks and other blemishes are visible because the glass coatings have deteriorated over time.
