The title on the negative, which the National Photo Company supplied and which the record marks as unverified, points to Red Cross work for blind readers in the years just after the First World War. Raised-type reading materials were one way such programs reached people who could not read print. The picture is a large glass negative from the Washington-based National Photo Company, which documented American public life from about 1906 into the 1930s. The record notes streaks and blemishes from the aging coating, a common trait of glass plates of this age.
