A Red Cross ambulance, marked with the organization's emblem, makes this picture distinct from the street and building views around it. The American Red Cross, founded in 1881, expanded its emergency and relief services in the early twentieth century, when motor vehicles were replacing horse-drawn wagons. The National Photo Company, which worked largely in Washington, D.C., recorded such scenes on glass negatives, and Herbert A. French donated this one to the Library of Congress in 1947. Faint streaks and blemishes on the negative come from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings.
