Labeled as American Red Cross salvage work, this 8 by 6 inch glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1928, the years just after World War I when the Red Cross ran relief and collection programs across the country. The title comes from notes written by the National Photo Company, the Washington, D.C. firm whose studio produced many thousands of plates, though the label has not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes on the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coating. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
